Revelation 20: Millennium and Great White Throne

1  And I saw an angel come down from heaven, having the key of the bottomless pit and a great chain in his hand.  2  And he laid hold on the dragon, that old serpent, which is the Devil, and Satan, and bound him a thousand years,  3  And cast him into the bottomless pit, and shut him up, and set a seal upon him, that he should deceive the nations no more, till the thousand years should be fulfilled: and after that he must be loosed a little season.  4  And I saw thrones, and they sat upon them, and judgment was given unto them: and I saw the souls of them that were beheaded for the witness of Jesus, and for the word of God, and which had not worshipped the beast, neither his image, neither had received his mark upon their foreheads, or in their hands; and they lived and reigned with Christ a thousand years.  5  But the rest of the dead lived not again until the thousand years were finished. This is the first resurrection.  6  Blessed and holy is he that hath part in the first resurrection: on such the second death hath no power, but they shall be priests of God and of Christ, and shall reign with him a thousand years.  7  And when the thousand years are expired, Satan shall be loosed out of his prison,  8  And shall go out to deceive the nations which are in the four quarters of the earth, Gog and Magog, to gather them together to battle: the number of whom is as the sand of the sea.  9  And they went up on the breadth of the earth, and compassed the camp of the saints about, and the beloved city: and fire came down from God out of heaven, and devoured them.  10  And the devil that deceived them was cast into the lake of fire and brimstone, where the beast and the false prophet are, and shall be tormented day and night for ever and ever.

What do the following interpretations of the Millennium believe?
Premillennial- A literal 1000 year reign of Christ who will return to earth before it begins.

Postmillennial- an unspecified period of time in which the world will get better and better, after which Christ will come back to earth.

Amillennial-  no real millennium at all, may refer to present life in heaven.

Which one do most Baptists believe and why?
Premillennial, because it interprets the passage literally and keeps it in a logical order with the rest of Revelation.

Note how many times the phrase “1000 years” used.
Six times, that means six times you must deny scripture if you don’t believe in the literal 1000 year reign of Christ which begins after his return and before eternity starts.

List the great events which mark this era.
Satan is bound for 1000 years, Christ reigns with the saints, great battle takes place at the end of the 1000 years, the dead in Hell are raised and brought before the Great White Throne for judgment.

Notice these other passages which deal with the millennium.  Isaiah 2:2-4, 9:6-7; 11:4-9; 30:15-33; 35; 44; 65:17-66:13; Jeremiah 23:5-6; Psalms 72
Write down some observations about the millennium.

Why do you think Satan will be loosed for a short season at the end of the millennium?
Finally, proof of God’s grace and man’s rebellion.  Even with Jesus on the earth, and Satan bound millions will turn in rebellion.

What is the final end of Satan?
He is cast into the lake of fire, joining the Beast and false Prophet who have been alone for 1000 years.

Reveleation 20:11-15

11  And I saw a great white throne, and him that sat on it, from whose face the earth and the heaven fled away; and there was found no place for them.  12  And I saw the dead, small and great, stand before God; and the books were opened: and another book was opened, which is the book of life: and the dead were judged out of those things which were written in the books, according to their works.  13  And the sea gave up the dead which were in it; and death and hell delivered up the dead which were in them: and they were judged every man according to their works.  14  And death and hell were cast into the lake of fire. This is the second death.  15  And whosoever was not found written in the book of life was cast into the lake of fire.

Who will be judged at the Great White Throne?
The dead, who were not resurrected before the millennium.

What is the basis of their judgment?
They are judged according to their works.

Is there any hope of some now going to eternal life?
No these are those who never believed.

Is the Lake of Fire the same as Hell?
No Hell (Sheol in the OT, Hades in the NT) is the abode of the dead now, it is a temporary holding place until the Day of Judgment. The Lake of Fire is for all eternity, but both are places of torment.

What is the point of the judgment?
It determines the degree of punishment.

What is the final proof of their eternal destiny?
They are not written in the Lamb’s book of Life.

Conclusion

We can’t help but ask ourselves, where will I be when time ends and eternity begins?

Will I be standing with the saints knowing that my name was written down or will I be resurrected from Hell to hear my final judgment, of eternity in the Lake of Fire?
